McKinney-Vento Program

When life gets tough, staying in school shouldn’t have to be.

The McKinney-Vento Program supports students and families who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability. If a child or youth lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, they may qualify for services through this program.

Who Might Qualify?

Students and families may be eligible if they are:

  • Staying with friends or relatives due to loss of housing or economic hardship (also known as "doubling up")
  • Living in substandard or inadequate conditions (e.g., no utilities, overcrowding, unsafe structures, garages, basements not intended for living)
  • Living in cars, RVs, tents, or on the street
  • Staying in shelters, transitional housing, or motels
  • Couch surfing or moving from place to place
  • Unaccompanied youth living without a parent or legal guardian

Available Support

Eligible students may receive access to:

  • Backpacks and school supplies
  • Hygiene products
  • Referrals for clothing, food, coats, and shoes
  • Information on shelters, housing, and energy assistance
  • Academic support and tutoring
  • FAFSA support and letters for graduating seniors
  • Caps and gowns for graduation
  • Transportation to and from their school of origin
  • Free school meals
  • Laundry assistance

If you believe a student or family may qualify, or need help connecting with support, please contact Ashlie Duncan, McKinney Vento Liaison, at 541-497-9097.

Displaced / Homeless / Families in Transition (McKinney-Vento)

Clothing Closet

There is a clothing closed maintained by the Family Services/Wellness Program that serves all of our student population, located at the Elementary School, which offer a wide variety of items ranging from tops and bottoms to shoes/socks and undergarments. Most clothing is gently used but some is new. We also have a wide range of hygiene products available (shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, toothbrushes, etc.).

In addition to our local donations, every fall we receive a large number of new winter coats and hoodies from ENTEK of Lebanon. This is a great addition to our Clothing Closets and definitely helps to keep our children warm during the cold winter months. We also receive grants from the OEA (Oregon Education Association) Foundation which enable us to purchase clothing or other items when the Clothing Closet does not have what is needed.

The Clothing Closets are open during school hours, and everyone is eligible to use them.

Pack Snack Program

Sharing Hands and community members are working with Central Linn school staff to provide a free supply of snacks to students who may need an additional food resource over the weekends.

Transportation

Students who are experiencing homelessness must be provided with transportation to and from their school of origin. The term school of origin means the school that a child or youth attended when permanently housed or the school in which the child or youth was last enrolled.

If you believe your child/children are eligible for transportation assistance, please contact Ashlie Duncan at 541-369-2851.
