Educational Assessments and Testing
Assessment is one of the many tools Central Linn School District uses to understand student learning, guide instruction, and identify areas where additional support or enrichment may be beneficial. No single test tells the whole story of a student’s progress, which is why we use a variety of assessments throughout the school year to help teachers, students, and families better understand growth over time and academic achievement.
Classroom Assessments
The most important information about student learning comes from the work students do every day in their classrooms. Assignments, projects, discussions, quizzes, writing samples, and teacher observations help guide instruction and provide meaningful feedback to students and families throughout the school year.
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
Central Linn utilizes Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments to monitor student growth and academic progress over time. MAP assessments are designed to measure what students know and are ready to learn next, allowing teachers to adjust instruction and provide targeted support or enrichment based on individual student needs. Because MAP focuses on growth rather than simply proficiency, it provides valuable information about student progress from year to year.
Oregon Statewide Assessments
As required by the Oregon Department of Education, Central Linn administers statewide assessments to eligible students in designated grade levels and subject areas. These assessments provide information about student achievement in relation to Oregon’s academic standards and help schools and districts evaluate program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
Oregon statewide assessments are administered in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science in grades designated by the state assessment system. Families receive information regarding assessment schedules, participation requirements, and available accommodations prior to testing each year. (Niche)
English Language Proficiency Assessments
Students who qualify for English Language Development services participate in assessments required by the state to measure progress toward English language proficiency. These assessments help schools determine appropriate supports and monitor student growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.
Accommodations and Accessibility Supports
Central Linn is committed to ensuring that all students have equitable access to assessments. Students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 Plans, or English Language Development supports may be eligible for accommodations or accessibility features during testing in accordance with state and federal requirements.
Assessment Results and Family Resources
Assessment results are one source of information used to support student learning and educational planning. Families are encouraged to review assessment information alongside classroom performance, teacher feedback, and other indicators of student growth. Questions regarding assessments, testing schedules, accommodations, or results may be directed to your child’s school or the district office for additional information and support.
Assessment Participation and Opt-Out Information
Central Linn School District recognizes that families have important questions and perspectives regarding statewide assessments. Oregon law provides parents and eligible adult students with certain rights regarding participation in state testing, and the district is committed to providing families with accurate information so they can make informed decisions.
Under Oregon law, parents and students who are 18 years of age or older may annually opt out of Oregon’s statewide English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments by submitting the required Oregon Department of Education opt-out form to their school. Students who do not participate in testing will be provided with supervised study time or an alternative activity while testing is taking place.
State Science assessments and English Language Proficiency assessments (ELPA) are governed by different requirements. Requests for exemption from these assessments must be based on qualifying disability-related needs or sincerely held religious beliefs and must follow the procedures established by the Oregon Department of Education and the district.
While participation in statewide assessments provides valuable information about student learning, academic growth, and program effectiveness, Central Linn respects the rights of families to make educational decisions for their children in accordance with Oregon law.
